A Whimsical, Wonderland-filled Fusion Wedding for Kathy + Tony

Kathy and Tony’s love story began in the beautiful city of Houston during one of Kathy’s business trips. Their first date transpired at the same spot where they initially locked eyes- the grand Hotel ZaZa, nestled in the heart of Houston’s Museum District.
From the beginning, Tony’s humor, fun-loving nature, and endearing goofiness captured Kathy’s heart. Despite the natural challenges of a long-distance relationship, their connection continued to flourish.
In the symphony of Tony's life, a crescendo of certainty played when he discovered that his days reached their peak with Kathy by his side. It didn't take much time for this incurable romantic to weave a masterstroke of affection. Amidst a journey to Vietnam, he orchestrated a proposal that was nothing short of magical.
Growing up in California, Kathy and Tony decided it best to have two weddings to ensure that their loved ones from Kathy’s hometown wouldn’t miss out on the celebration. While Kathy’s mother enthusiastically took charge of planning the traditional California wedding, Kathy and Tony eagerly embarked on the task of organizing their fusion wedding in Houston, set for Saturday, April 8th, 2023.
Raised in the Catholic faith, Kathy envisioned a formal and traditional California wedding, making the Houston affair an opportunity to blend their Vietnamese and Houstonian cultures. During their initial planning consultation, the couple emphasized the importance of great entertainment and food. Tony, a maestro in his own right, aspired for their guests to relish the atmosphere of the day, immersed in the melodies of gifted musicians and an array of delectable cuisines. With just ten months before their big day, they enlisted the expertise of wedding planner, Karissa Joy Weddings & Events, to meticulously handle the intricate details and secure Houston’s finest vendors.
The whimsical wedding ceremony was held in the lush, enchanted-garden setting of Hermann Park’s picturesque Celebration Gardens. Brimming with color, quirkiness, and a free-spirited climate, the ceremony captured the essence of a storybook fairytale.
Following the ceremony, guests were invited into an Alice in Wonderland-inspired tea party. Magicians and Madhatter’s engaged the crowd, while a string quartet enlivened the party with pop songs. Themed catering staff roamed the garden, pushing dim-son carts, serving gourmet tea sandwiches and fruit-infused mocktails. The entire experience immersed everyone in a whimsical storybook vibe.
Transitioning to the charmingly elegant, historical Hotel Zaza for the cocktail hour festivities, guests were transported to another era. Flapper girls in glamorous costumes welcomed them with sophisticated cocktails, accompanied by a jazz band serenading the air with Frank Sinatra classics and a speak-easy ambiance. Art Deco inspired details and Gatsby-themed décor adorned the space, evoking the allure of the prohibition era.
The reception took place in the romantic “Phantom” ballroom of the hotel. Warm, amber-lit candle collections, vibrant blooms of florals, and plush lounge furniture contributed to the aura. Over the dance floor, a canopy of stunning layers of lavender and white wisteria intertwined with crystal details cascaded elegantly above the monogramed floor, adding an ethereal touch. This non-traditional and witty couple infused their wedding décor and details with their unique personalities and creativity.
To the surprise and awe of everyone, Tony, accompanied by a select few family members who are also musicians, took the stage after the formalities. His heartfelt performance, singing Kathy’s favorite love song, captivated the entire crowd, especially his awestruck bride.
As the night progressed, the reception reached another climax with an energetic performance from the groom’s favorite 80s cover band, the Spazmatics. The dance floor was packed, electrified with high energy, glow stick party favors, and upbeat cover songs. Kathy and Tony danced the night away, creating unforgettable memories for everyone in attendance.
From the words of Frank Sinatra, this event was “Unforgettable in every way.”
